SUN COUNTRY AMATEUR GOLF ASSOCIATION
The Sun Country Amateur Golf Association was founded in 1976. For a number of years, a couple of dedicated amateur golfers had literally conducted the region's major competitive events from the trunk of a car. But as the number of competitors grew, so did the need to have a uniform handicap system and an administrative body to oversee it.
Since its beginnings, the association has matured into one of the USGA's most excellent and efficient representatives. The Sun Country Amateur Golf Association provides administrative services for all amateurs playing in the geographic area of New Mexico and West Texas.
We are an association of member clubs and every member club has a voice in association business. Each year every club appoints a Sun Country delegate who is the liaison to the association and is the club's delegated voter on association business.
The association has a board of 16 directors elected by the member clubs from eight districts. The board can also appoint at-large directors to serve one-year terms. The board meets four times annually to set specific policies for the association. The board elects the executive committee, oversees our annual budget, and hires an executive director.
But the strength of our association is our volunteers, golfers just like you. Our dedicated directors and committee people travel throughout the section to conduct tournaments, to measure and rate courses, to give speeches and seminars and promote amateur golf. They have the common desire to give back to the game that has meant so much to them. Volunteers are the fiber that makes up the structure of the Sun Country Amateur Golf Association. Their reward is the knowledge that they have helped keep the game alive for players in the future.
Our purpose is to promote mutual trust and friendly relationships among members: by encouraging and promoting successful golf operations; by aiding courses and clubs through study and research in the care, maintenance and improvement of greens and fairways; by developing educational programs related to the Rules of Golf; by conducting tournaments; by arranging tournament dates with minimal conflict among golf clubs and associations; by providing a handicap system for members; and by cooperating with other golf associations in the region.
The Isleta Eagle is a 27-hole, public daily-fee golf course with three distinct nine-hole tracts. Each tract was designed around the natural beauty of the site, giving the course a resort-like character. The three nines—Lakes, Mesa and Arroyo—are centered around a pueblo-style adobe club-house with spectacular views of the golf course and championship practice range. The Lakes Nine plays down off the mesa slopes to two large lake complexes. Seven of the holes are designed around the large contoured edge-shaped lakes. The Lakes Nine signature hole is a beautiful par-3 hole built into a five-acre lake with a large island green complex.
The Mesa Nine is a magnificent and beautiful golf tract. Designed on the native grass, these holes boast backdrop views of Mount Taylor and the Rio Grande. Most of the holes on the Mesa Nine are designed around and across native mesa washes.
The Arroyo Nine was designed around the largest mesa arroyo, creating the course’s most spectacular view from the No. 1 hole tee. On the first and ninth holes, a player can negotiate strategies over and adjacent to the large arroyo.
All nine-hole tracts are par 36, with any two combinations adding to at least 7000 yards.
